The Obama Administration, which has been engaged in a comprehensive health insurance reform, is trying to promote the use of IT in the medical field and to establish “Connected Healthcare” with the creation of multi-sectorial partnership. The Massachusetts State, in this respect, has been actively promoting the use of IT in the field of healthcare, centering on the teaching hospitals of Harvard Medical School.
In Japan, meanwhile, the creation of a medical system which prevents diseases by utilizing Big Data will commence soon, the use of IT in healthcare has been gathering momentum for the purpose of improving the quality of patient care and the reduction of medical costs. In disaster affected areas, where ageing is advancing, a program for providing better care for the elderly by means of medical IT has been actively promoted whereby an establishment of a local healthcare information network made it possible for the families and the professionals to take better coordinated actions.
This roundtable discussion invited professionals with diverse backgrounds both from Japan and the U.S. We shared various successful cases in healthcare IT and discussed openly about “Connected Healthcare” through which we tried to search for new solutions and further collaboration on the problems of an ageing society, increasing medical costs, etc. faced in both countries.
